Polyphasic Sleep Introduction

Today I decided that I am going to attempt to start sleeping polyphasically. Polyphasic sleep is basically exactly what it sounds like; sleeping at multiple times (phases) throughout the day instead of all at once. After doing some research, I have had some trouble learning exactly how polyphasic sleep works. However, most people say it trains your body to skip straight to deep sleep and REM sleep, instead of cycling from light sleep to deep sleep to REM sleep over and over again like it does monophasically. I do not want to go into much detail about how polyphasic sleep works, but here is a page that does a good job of explaining it:

My ultimate goal is to sleep for one three hour block, and then take three twenty minute naps throughout the day, totaling just four hours of sleep per day. Essentially I will be sleeping for four hours a day without sacrificing any valuable REM sleep. If you look at the linked page you can see that I am attempting the “Everyman 3-Nap Plan.”

Currently, I sleep around nine hours per night from about midnight to 9:00 a.m. My new sleep schedule will hopefully look like this:

Core Sleep: 2:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m.
Nap 1: 9:30 a.m. – 9:50 a.m.
Nap 2: 3:00 p.m. – 3:20 p.m.
Nap 3: 8:00 p.m. – 8:20 p.m.

It was fairly difficult to find a schedule that worked well with going out on weekend nights, and this seems to really be my only option. I am happy with how it looks because the Core Sleep time fits a semi-normal time frame. I know plenty of people who go to bed around 2 a.m. and I know plenty who wake up around 5 a.m. However, I do not know anyone who routinely goes to bed at 2 a.m. and wakes up at 5 a.m. I guess I will have to be alone in the middle of a Night Owl vs. Early Bird Venn Diagram.

After reading some blogs about people who have attempted this and failed miserably, I have decided that I am not going to jump right into this new sleep schedule. I will gradually decrease my amount of Core Sleep until it hits the three hour mark, while still taking the twenty minute naps throughout the day. The gradual decrease will hopefully be fairly quick, as I want to be at my new polyphasic sleep schedule in about one week. I will begin this sleep experiment tonight. Here goes nothing.
